Title: Exposition Internationale Bruxelles - 1897

A beautiful large medallion measuring 69 mm across, this is one of the sought after medallions of Belgium. Struck in honour of the Brussels International Exhibition. The obverse is very high relief whilst the reverse which is also in high relief is concave. This medallion is struck in 'coin format' - Obv. and rev. have 180 deg die rotation.

D'un côté 3 dieux font alliance: Vulcain avec l'enclume et le marteau, et 2 déesses dont l'une porte une corne d'abondance. Inscription "exposition universelle Bruxelles 1897 tout autour. Signature de Jul Lagae sculpteur et de Wolfers fecit. De l'autre côté:2 lions se font face sur les 2 pattes arrière et soutiennent un blason décoré d'un lion et couronné. Banderolle par dessous "L'union fait la force". Inscription tout autour "Royaume de Belgique. Koninkryk Belgie." L'avers est légèrement incurvé. Les motifs sont en relief très marqués, de toute beauté. Bronze d'une très belle couleur rouille.

Obverse:A superb piece of artwork shows an allegory of three persons. On the left is that of a man representing INDUSTRY, and on the left, representing the 'ARTS' is a woman, classically dressed holding in her left hand a cornucopia - the 'horn of plenty'. These two figures are shaking hands whilst between them is another female figure probably representing Belgium with her outstretched arms resting on the shoulders of the other two figures.
The legend around the rim reads Exposition Internationale Bruxelles - 1897

Reverse:The upper portion carries the Arms of Belgium with two Lions Rampant as Bearers. The motto below the arms is L'Union Fait la Force. The lower portion of the medal is plain for an added inscription. Legend around the rim reads: Royaume de Belgique Koninkryk Belgie
