Obverse:The famous 'Lusitania' medallion designed by Karl Goetz in Germany depicting the sinking of this 'innocent civilian' ocean liner by a German U-boat. Much controversy has arisen concerning this medal, which has English and American copies. This is an original English copy issued by St Dunstan's Soldiers and Sailors Society to stir up anti-Germany feeling during the war. The Engraver - Karl Goetz said that it was issued not as glorification of the killing of so many innocent civilians, but of the greed of the Cunard company selling tickets to civilians on a ship which the company knew was carrying munitions of war, thereby making it a 'legitimate' military target. It comes in its Original fitted box - the most perfectly clean and preserved box I have ever seen. It also has a complete Original leaflet with it which, although complete, is in a distressed state, and needs some T.L.C. Due to years of being folded it has leterally dropped to pieces. In its original state it would be folded into 12 sections, but some of the folds have separated and it is now in 8 pieces. It is quite repairable.
