I was reading an article "Cheques & Sherlock Holmes" which mentions that Dr. Watson probably banked with Cox & Company in London, and that they were the pay agents for the British Army in India. Hence they could have set up Cox & Company (France) Ltd to pay the U.S. troops in France.
I can find no other information on this bank except this poster from 1920 where the head office in Paris is shown bedecked with English & French flags, with the word "Emprunt" = "Exchange" and "on y souscrit" = "They subscribe".
