Fisher, Wells, Gyde, Fisher, and Drayton - a failed banking group
HOW TO ORDER
Most of the cheques listed on this page are hand-written on non-bank paper. The earliest is printed, with those of later date all being hand-written. They are all drawn on the same banking group of
Fisher, Wells, Gyde and Drayton

in different combinations of two, or more of the names. Every cheque mentions the name 'GYDE'.  'The Country Banks of England and Wales' issued by the Chartered Institute of Bankers (pg 149), which one would expect to be an impeccable source of information shows the name as GLYDE'. The printed cheques of the period show the correct spelling as 'GYDE'. A search of Google reveals that a certain William Gyde was a philanthropist, and benefactor of parts of the Town of Cheltenham around the period of 1816. See this link (about half-way down the page) where William GYDE is mentioned as being on the same Committee as Thomas Henney - the drawer of all the cheques. Thus, it can be shown that William Gyde and Thomas Henney knew each other, and it may also be reasonable to assume that as William Gyde was a very influential person in Cheltenham at that time, and that he was also a partner in the bank as well.

It would appear that from its foundation in 1812, that it lasted less about 5 years (until 1817) when all the partners (except Fisher) resigned. Thomas Ashmore stepped in as the new co-director and within two years they faced a bankruptcy commission.

All the items are signed as drawer by Thomas Henney, and on the back by the teller with a hand-written date. Minor archival repairs made.

All cheques are drawn on the Cheltenham branch of Wells, Gyde, Fisher, and Drayton (or combinations of those names) and were issued in 1816. In many cases the title of the bank is different. All items are listed in date order. This was a very short lived bank, and printed cheques may have had only one issue. It seems odd that the same drawer (Henney) is using printed cheques in February, and then from later that same month until November, he uses handwritten ones.
